About

a

Who is Olivia McLean?

Olivia McLean is a Scottish composer and cellist pursuing a Master of Music in Composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Her music combines structured experimentation with inspiration from everyday sounds, the natural world, and personal experience, focusing on texture and timbre to invite reflection in listeners. A recent highlight for Olivia was taking part in Sound Scotland's Emerging Composer Development Opportunity, where she workshopped and composed a new work for Red Note Duo (Katherine Bryer, oboe; Cerys Ambrose-Evans, bassoon) under the mentorship of Anna Appleby, resulting in performance at Sound Festival in November 2025. Olivia holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Glasgow and alongside composition, she enjoys a varied freelance cello career, including gigs with The Tenementals, collaborating on electronic projects with friends, and various session musician work. She is a strong advocate for equity of creative opportunities, and believes that music should remain freely accessible for all.
